I am someone who strives to become a professional critic. I watch and review many movies. I view the eyes of movies as something as an art form. I have followed many critics over the years, but once I was thirteen I knew writing film reviews was going to be my passion. I learned from watching multiple episodes of Ebert And Roeper in my teen years, and then in middle school I began writing film reviews for a newspaper club. I am also an avid fan of the arts of Chicago including Theatre, Comedy, and music. Films, however, are my primary focus.

Honey Don’t! Review

Actresses Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza are a hurricane of fun and mysterious characterizations. Honey Don’t! is a unique crime thriller and dark comedy. This film feels experimental-because it pushes all kinds of limits while also finding humor in moments that should not be so funny. Directed by Ethan Coen, horrid behaviors thrive in an immersive way. It is like Fargo with some hidden gems, but in the end is unable to fulfill its potential brilliance.

The film focuses on Honey O’Donahue (Qualley), a lesbian detective making all kinds of eerie choices while also navigating weird crimes. Many of the issues are entangled with a church run by the mysterious Reverend Drew Devlin (played by Chris Evans). He is a reverend up to all kinds of shady activities when he is off duty. With murders and various crimes occurring, Honey’s mind is boggled.  In addition, she is busy trying to find love for a colleague, MG Falcone (Plaza). The two establish a secret. loving relationship. At the same time, the small-town that Honey patrols remain at odds given the murders and the shady Reverend Devlin. As the story progresses, the circumstances surrounding the unexplained crimes get even messier.

It is a film in which all the characters are two-sided. The elements needed to explore trust in relationships are perfect for this set of characters, but the execution falls short. This is likely due to how Ethan writes his scripts which normally entailtragedy and sad endings. At other times, Ethan’s scripts leave his viewers twisted. There is much that is twisted in Honey Don’t!, including Honey’s bad choices. Not one of the characters is up to par in this film. However, Honey Don’t! is vibrant with interesting layers of tragedy that continue to make attempts to get to the truth. Unfortunately, things fall apart quite early, which has an impact on the film’s overall enjoyability.

The storyline veers away from the crime scenarios to try to focus more on the risky behaviors in pursuit of adding somejoyfulness in the film. This was a turn off for me because I was expecting lots of laughs from cleverness since it is written by one of the Coen brothers. I did not get much of that but instead got a whole lot of intimate moments that seemed unwritten. The performances were magnificent, but the connection to the plot was limited. In the end, the film fell short of its potential.

Honey Don’t! became increasingly strange as it went on due to the detective wanting her own desires to be fulfilled. The sameissue applies to the Reverend. The roles of superiority should befunny and attention-grabbing, but their characterizations were written poorly. Also, there were too many random ideas that fell in and out of place which were equally flawed because their outcomes were predictable. This is far from my favorite film byEthan Coen, but at least the writing was effective in generating some momentum. Two out of four stars for Honey Don’t!

Fan Expo 2025 Discussions with Rick Hoffman and Helen Hunt

Fan Expo 2025 was one of the most nostalgic for this convention in Chicago. I had the opportunity to see celebrities, Rick Hoffman and Helen Hunt, say a few words. Hoffman’s discussion was devoted to the series Suits, and Hunt’s was about her diverse roles over the years. Both actors emphasized thatacting evolves over time with different characterizations andincreasing comfort playing unique roles. Here are a few highlights of the conversations with Hoffman and Hunt.

Hoffman’s discussion about Suits touched upon how his character changed over time. Apparently, the popularity of Suitshas grown again due to the writers’ strike in 2023. Hoffman also provided context for how the show has been rewarding to him. Suits allowed him to explore the egotistical and hysterical sides of his role as Louis Litt. Given that Suits has regained popularity, Hoffman’s appearance at Fan Expo generated much excitement for its many fans.

Hunt spoke about her roles and choosing them over her career. She talked a lot also about acting as well as living life outside fame. I appreciated her references to two wonderful films, Cast Away and As Good as It Gets. Her down-to-earth personality brought positivity to Fan Expo this year. Her decisions related toacting choices fit her vibe perfectly. Hunt is legendary and I enjoyed witnessing her joyful personality and moving voice.

Fan Expo 2025 The Mummy Returns Panel and The Star Wars Panel

Two panels of pure nostalgia that truly captivated my attention this year were The Mummy Returns reunion panel and the Star Wars panel. Both featured many memories of the past from these wonderful franchises due to the characters that audiences around the world loved. These franchises go way back to the early 2000s, which was the height of an era. The Mummy Returns panel, and The Star Wars panel offered many moments filled with quotes and laughter to cherish forever from Fan Expo 2025.

The Mummy Returns Panel included Brendan Fraser, Patricia Velasquez, John Hannah, and Oded Fehr. All brought bolts of lightning-sparked joy to the discussion with their many words of inspiration. The crowd loved it when Fraser said, “How about that deep dish pizza!” The panel went on to discuss many interesting elements of The Mummy Returns. The actors talking about what inspires them to act was particularly compelling. Velasquez said, “Watching movies was my only hope!” Rough backgrounds led to increased empathy in The Mummy Returns. Fehr also shared, “I was always quoting movies.” Many heartfelt comments made this panel mesmerizing and memorable.

The Star Wars panel featured Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen, stars who dueled with lightsabers to the death in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith back in 2005. This time, the two actors brought much joy and inspiration to Fan Exp 2025. Star Wars fans were on fire due to the interesting revelations of both McGregor and Christensen. When it comes to learning combat McGregor stated, “You learn the fights like a dance.” This panel sure felt like a well-rehearsed dance too! Christensen then said, “I’d rather be really skilled with the force!” This statement madean impact as the audience gasped with excitement. While he joined the dark side in his role, he infused this panel with hope. Fortunately, the force was definitely with McGregor and Christensen as well as the lucky audience during this panel.
